Preparing for general conference...

I am looking forward to this weekend.
It's the 181st semiannual General Conference of
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

"Now, brothers and sisters, we are anxious to listen to the messages which will be presented to us today and tomorrow. Those who will address us have sought heaven’s help and direction as they have prepared their messages. That we may be filled with the Spirit of the Lord and be uplifted and inspired as we listen and learn is my prayer."
-President Thomas S. Monson

Preparing for Conference...

What are your personal challenges and opportunities? President Uchtdorf said that “there are messages in each general conference given as a gift and a blessing from heaven specifically for our personal life situations.”

To help us receive these heaven-sent gifts and blessings from conference, he suggests three basic concepts.

"In preparation for general conference, let me suggest three basic concepts that may help us to better receive, remember, and apply the words spoken by the Lord’s servants.

1. Members of the Church are entitled to personal revelation as they listen to and study the inspired words spoken at general conference.

As you prepare for general conference, I invite you to ponder questions you need to have answered. For example, you might yearn for direction and guidance by the Lord regarding challenges you are facing.

Answers to your specific prayers may come directly from a particular talk or from a specific phrase. At other times answers may come in a seemingly unrelated word, phrase, or song. A heart filled with gratitude for the blessings of life and an earnest desire to hear and follow the words of counsel will prepare the way for personal revelation.

2. Don’t discount a message merely because it sounds familiar.

Prophets have always taught by repetition; it is a law of learning. You will hear repetition in themes and doctrines in general conference. Let me reassure you: this is not due to a lack of creativity or imagination. We continue to hear messages on similar issues because the Lord is teaching and impressing upon our minds and hearts certain foundational principles of great eternal importance that must be understood and acted upon before we can move on to other things. A wise builder first lays the foundation before erecting the walls and the roof.

3. The words spoken at general conference should be a compass that points the way for us during the coming months.

If we listen to and follow the promptings of the Spirit, they will serve as a Liahona, guiding us through the unknown, challenging valleys and mountains that are ahead (see 1 Nephi 16).

Since the world began, God has raised up prophets who speak the will of heaven to the people of their times. It is our responsibility to listen and then apply the messages the Lord provides for us.

Our merciful and loving Heavenly Father has not forsaken and will not forsake His children. Today, as well as in times past, He has appointed apostles and prophets. He continues to reveal His word to them.

What a marvelous privilege it is to hear God’s messages for each of us during general conference! Let us prepare well for this great blessing of divine guidance delivered by His chosen servants.

For this is no ordinary blessing."
~ “General Conference—No Ordinary Blessing,” September 2011 Ensign.

I did try to prepare for general conference... I went to the temple and I have read and listened to some of the conference talks from general conference in April. I have been praying to feel the Spirit and to make even one change for the better. (Go here if you want to watch: General Conference section of LDS.org.)

Quote for the Week - Forget-Me-Not

A Symbol of Joy
Sisters, there is something inspiring and sublime about the little forget-me-not flower. I hope it will be a symbol of the little things that make your lives joyful and sweet. Please never forget that you must be patient and compassionate with yourselves, that some sacrifices are better than others, that you need not wait for a golden ticket to be happy. Please never forget that the “why” of the gospel of Jesus Christ will inspire and uplift you. And never forget that your Heavenly Father knows, loves, and cherishes you. —President Dieter F. Uchtdorf

My Firstborn...

Christopher Glenn turned 29 on September 18th, 29... how is that possible?!

I know... I look awful in this picture but it was one of the happiest days of my life! I woke up at 2:00 the morning of September 18. After about 2 hours of having contractions, Tim and I headed for the hospital. Chris was born at 9:44 and weighed 7 pounds 9 1/2 ounces. I pushed for over an hour and broke some blood vessels in my eyes after giving it all I had! I still have a broken blood vessel in my left eye after all these years. I don't mind, it was all worth it!

Nobody was happier than Tim, he waited a long time for a family of his own. We thought it was so cute the way Chris had his hands on his head, it was as if he was saying, that gave me a headache!

I think Chris looks like Cash in this picture!

Chris didn't want to have a party but it just not possible to let the day go by without a celebration. It was one of those times where you hope it's a good day and it was better than I imagined.

Chris wanted chicken and beef kabobs and you can see from the empty table they were delicious!

From Christopher's Uncle Lee ~ He's not only his uncle but a valued friend.

Lee and Chris' good friend Adrian ate with us. They are admiring Tiffani's new car.

Chris has lost over 20 pounds, I'm very proud of him. Handsome!!!

We can't have a party without you know who!

Cash was very interested in Chris' birthday pumpkin pie!

After the pie, we took turns telling Chris why we love him. It was a wonderful evening. Thanks to Lee, Adrian, Mark, Tiffani and Cash for celebrating with us!

I know this is your year son! It will all work out, I promise!

Quote for the week - You Can Do It

“I hope someday you will have a longing that seems to wring your soul where you hit a wall that seems insurmountable. If your duty lies beyond that wall, do not stand back and say, ‘I cannot do it.’ You may want to do it, but wanting is not sufficient. You must ask God for power. Then you must be willing to exercise your faith and do everything you are able to do. “You can walk from where you stand, up to the wall. When you get there, and you have gone as far as you can, you will find in answer to your prayer that there is a hidden ladder by which you can scale it, or there is a door which you could not see from where you were first standing. God’s hand is shown. He will help you. All good things require effort. That which is worth having will cost part of your physical being, your intellectual power and your spiritual power. ‘Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.’ But you have to ask, you have to knock, you have to seek.”
~ President David O. McKay

Birthday Boy!

Cash turned 1 on September 14! Tiffani spent the day with him, just the two of them. She took him to the Thanksgiving Point Farm and loved on him all day.

In the evening we gathered at Mark and Tiff's for a party. Tiffani made darling decorations and lots of yummy treats. I know Cash will look at the pictures and know how much he is loved.

I can't believe a year has passed. Every month I feel I've been part of a miracle. We watched Cash grow inside of Tiffani. We watched him move on an ultrasound. We were overjoyed at his birth. We held him when he couldn't lift his head. We cheered the first time he rolled over. We propped him up with pillows so he could sit up. We laughed and cheered again when he pulled himself up on the furniture.

Uncle Chris and Cash

And now here he is, one year old turning the pages of his favorite book, making mooing sounds like a cow. He cruises everywhere now and I am so grateful to have had a front row seat to this amazing first year of his life. Truth is none of us want to share him, he's so irresistible and sweet. Our families are small but love is abundant. Tiff's parents are amazing and so is her sister and her family. Between us, Cash will have all the love and support one boy needs!

Cash has been blessed to have wonderful parents, they will make sure he has a full and happy life.

He loves his new ride from Mommy and Daddy!

I wish I had a fork!

Mark likes the college savings account!

Being a mother and grandmother has changed my perspective on everyone around me. Everyone is somebody's child, somebody's miracle, deserving of love. Even the homeless beggar on the sidewalk. I look at him with compassion, just because once upon a time, he too was a one year old crawling around on somebody's carpet.

Time goes by so quickly. How magical it is to watch, how wonderful to love someone so much.

365 Days... 12 Months of Absolute Delight

Dear Cash,

It has been so wonderful to think about you this week, and remember the day you were born. We all anticipated your birth with such excitement and couldn't wait to meet you. It has been a year of so much joy because of you. You are so happy and such a good boy. I love it when you come to Grandma's house to play. I never plan on getting any of my work done, I just want to be with you.

I think about all the things that I wish for you and your life. I wish for happiness and good days all of your life. I know there will be some bad days, but that's where you have a choice to learn from those times.  Someone once said that life is 10% what happens to you, and 90% how you handle it. I pray you will be strong, yet always humble.

You have wonderful parents who love you. I know you will always honor them. Stay close to your family, they will always be there for you. I love so much Cash.

Happy Birthday!

Wordless Wednesday - Have you seen Cash?
